Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) is a laboratory measurement that reflects the maximum amount of iron that can be bound by transferrin, the main iron-transport protein in the blood. It is calculated from serum iron and unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), and helps assess the body’s iron transport status.

TIBC is commonly used in the evaluation of iron metabolism disorders. Elevated levels are often associated with iron deficiency anaemia, while low levels may be seen in chronic inflammatory conditions, malignancy, and infection. It is typically interpreted alongside serum iron, ferritin, and transferrin saturation for a complete assessment.

The findings related to these particular clinical tests are a general guide and do not cover every possible scenario, this is because every patient is unique and these results only have true clinical significance when combined with the patient’s full medical history, a physical exam, and other diagnostic findings.
