Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
The AFP test measures the level of alpha-fetoprotein, a protein normally produced during fetal development. In adults, raised AFP levels may be associated with certain liver disorders or specific types of malignancy.
Clinical indications
* Screening and surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients at increased risk
* Monitoring of germ cell tumours, including testicular cancer
* Evaluation of chronic liver conditions such as hepatitis or cirrhosis in specialist care settings
* Supportive use in pregnancy-related assessments for fetal development (maternal serum AFP)
The findings related to these particular clinical tests are a general guide and do not cover every possible scenario, this is because every patient is unique and these results only have true clinical significance when combined with the patient’s full medical history, a physical exam, and other diagnostic findings.
