Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient required for normal DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and neurological function. It plays a key role in maintaining healthy nerve cells and proper brain function.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia, characterised by enlarged red blood cells (macrocytosis), and may also result in neurological symptoms such as tingling sensations (paraesthesia), cognitive changes, and, in severe or prolonged cases, irreversible nerve damage.

Early detection and treatment are important to prevent long-term complications. Because both vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies can present similarly, they are often tested together when investigating macrocytic anaemia or unexplained neurological symptoms.

The findings related to these particular clinical tests are a general guide and do not cover every possible scenario, this is because every patient is unique and these results only have true clinical significance when combined with the patient’s full medical history, a physical exam, and other diagnostic findings.
